Of Andy, Harrison, Calvin and Alfred Proffit, only Alfred survived. Mary Alice Hancock of Moravian Falls in Wilkes County wrote their story in the 1970's, using excerpts of their war-time letters.

Mary Alice Hancock of Moravian Falls in Wilkes County wrote their story in the 1970's, using excerpts of their war-time letters. Since the book was originally written by a woman, Dr. Suzanne Irwin agreed to read the narrative. Four men involved with local theater groups (Jeff Halsey, Gilly Macknee, Jeremy Halsey and Trent Chappell) read the boys' parts and Imaging Specialists, Inc. developed the video around the audio timeline, using images from many sources like Harpers Weekly, Library of Congress, and others.

Four Brothers in Gray premiered at the Alleghany County Public Library on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 6:30pm. The feature-length television production has also been aired on Alleghany Community Television and SkyBestTV.
